Swift, Getz and Fusion diesels

Design and interiors

The Fusion and Getz have beige interiors, which seems to be a favourite colour for interiors these days. The beige-and-black dashboard on the Getz looks good but a drawback is the cheaplooking wood finish on the central console. The high seats and big windows along with the user friendly cabin are retained on the Getz, which is a good thing. The Fusion is half-a-size bigger than its contenders but like the Getz, it too, isn't as good as the Swift when it comes to quality of fit and finish.

The Swift also has the best front seats that are wide and supportive. The Getz and the Swift come with a onetouch- down driver's window, but the Fusion misses out on this convenience. The downside to the Swift is its black interiors with a few splashes of silver on the doorpads and the gearknob, which fail to liven up the interiors. In terms of space, the Fusion has an advantage over the other two as it is bigger and that translates into more space. While the Maruti has the best front seats, the Fusion has the best rear seats.

The Fusion also has a lot of useful cubbyholes and storage options and comes with quite a few cubbyholes too. There's one ahead of the driver's knees, one under the centre console and one under the audio system slot. The Swift scores the least when it comes to storage space. If getting away from the traf- fic lights double-quick is all you are worried about, then look no further than the Getz. Its 110bhp CRDi engine easily outperforms the other two.

Changing gear

However, in everyday traffic, driving the Getz isn't that great as below 2000rpm, you will find yourself changing gears more often than in the Swift or the Fusion.

Thankfully, the light gearshift action and clutch never makes this as much of a chore as it sounds. The Fusion's TDCi engine makes the most noise. The diesel clatter is ever present in the cabin, but it is a smooth motor all the same. Vibrations are well controlled and at cruising speeds, even the engine noise dies down. Then you step into the Swift. It doesn't accelerate as quickly as the Getz, but throttle responses are better and this makes everyday driving all the more easier.

There's not much to choose between the Swift and the Getz in terms of re- finement.

The Getz has slightly more vibration when the engine is idling, but the Swift has slightly more engine noise. That said, both these diesels are so refined that it's only when you rev the engine that you can tell what fuel they are running on.

With regard to fuel economy, the Swift is the most efficient and delivered 16.75kpl on an average. The Fusion came second an overall figure of 15.47kpl and the Getz delivered an average of 13.75kpl.

The oodles of interior space in the Fusion is its USP.

However, it is Rs 1.5 lakh more expensive than the cheapest diesel hatch in this group.

The Getz has a potent engine and great performance but in a price sensitive segment and that too for a diesel powered car, it isn't very fuel efficient.

The winner

The Swift however, is the cheapest of the lot, has the best fuel economy and will be the cheapest to maintain in the long run.

In addition, it is backed by Maruti's awesome service. Yes, you guessed right. The Swift remains the undefeated champ in this segment.
